The Green Dragon is a fine dining restaurant and café dreamt up by the team behind the Jacobean Hotel. By using only British and locally sourced as possible produce and products supporting independent suppliers. The building dates back to 1450 and the ethos of the brand is learning from the past,
“We believe that the best of British is actually the best in the world and we believe, just as they did in the 1500s, that knowing your suppliers as well as you know your customers is essential to providing quality service you’ll be remembered for”
After working with the team on the Jacobean Hotel they knew Black Ivy Design would be the only design studio who could deliver their vision exactly as they wanted by enhancing the historic architecture yet putting a modern twist to it to liven up the space.
Since opening the restaurant has been nominated for Foodie Awards for Fine Dining Restaurant of the Year Award and Fine Dining Chef of the Year Award.
The building had been through many facets. Dating back to 1450, the building had to be moved to its current location after the 1940 bombing of Coventry by the Nazis.
The medieval city was mostly decimated by the Germans, so the council decided to move all the remaining historic buildings into a new site on Spon Street.
This beautiful but neglected building was clearly in need of an update. The owners were determined to breathe new life into the site and restore its many original features.
The building had been closed for many years, so the focus was on elevating the building’s beauty while also acknowledging its history.
All of this had to be achieved alongside the goal of creating a fresh new contemporary scheme to attract the hip city centre crowd with its chic and on-trend style and fine dining tastes.
The client has no idea how to achieve this. Drawing influence from the visual symmetry and colour palettes of Wes Anderson, the team at The Green Dragon simply wanted to ensure the space was Instagramable for their diners.
This project was a unique challenge in preserving the heritage of the building while still creating something that felt unique and innovative.
The team at The Green Dragon needed an interior design team with the combined commercial awareness and design acumen to achieve their vision. Black Ivy Design was the natural choice to help create a modern and inviting space that would be irresistible to customers.
The scheme contrasts the building’s 15th Century architecture, with rich velvets and playful tones giving the venue warmth and intimacy whilst also contrasting against the original oak beams.
We decided the space called for a touch of biophilic design and modern sphere lighting with brass handles to add some glamour.
The client was overwhelmed with the results and quirky design.
